Jakob Lena Knebl

Jakob Lena Knebl (*1970, Baden, near Vienna) studied fashion at the University of Applied Arts Vienna with Raf Simons and textual sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Heimo Zobernig. It is clear how such a backgrounds informed her varied multimedia work which straddles sculpture, installation, photography, performance, fashion and textiles. In her practice she combines the language of fashion with art historical argumentation. Her recent works deal with compositions of other artists and play with objects of contemporary European culture. For many years, Knebl has been working collabortively with her partner Ashley Hans Scheirl.

In Knebl’s often playful and witty works, identity is often a focus that is woven heavily throughout. This is explicitly on view in works such as Public Installation (2019) at Rathaus Wien and the performance Wir Sind Henkel (2020). In Knebl’s installation and sculptural works ornaments of interiority such as crystals, candles and skulls, symbolisms and idioms of contemporary ‘subculture’ suggest a self in flux, amidst the flows of society and commerce. Figuration and allusions to the body in all its fluidity, across medias including self-portraiture, situates the subjectivity of the artist amongst the vibrant set-like assemblages, hyper realities of her imagination. The body becomes part of the set just another object amongst the ornament, that is assigned meaning in its given context.

Knebl, alongside Hans Scheirl, will represent Austria at the 59th Venice Biennale (2022). Her works have been presented in exhibitions in Musée d´Art et d´Histoire, Geneva (2021), MUMOK, Vienna (2021), Kunsthaus Bregenz, Bregenz (2020), Künstlerhaus, Vienna (2019), Lyon Biennale of Contemporary Art (2019), Kunsthaus Zürich, Zurich (2018), Museum für Zeitgenössische Kunst Belvedere, Vienna (2017) among many others.
